THE Virginia Commonwealth
University (VCU)Qatar has named four students from Oman as among the
winners of the first phase of its 2008 Design Competition. The design
competition provided VCU Qatar the opportunity to recognise the talents
of young people throughout the Middle East, Asia and North Africa. The
hope is that many of the participants will consider continuing their
development as artists and designers at VCUQatar.
‘What Success Means to You’
was the theme of the first phase of 2008 Design Competition supported by
Qatar Islamic Bank. The highest quality entries put forward were from
Oman, according to the organisers. The winning entries for Oman
included: first place by Fatima Zaura Kamil from the Sri Lankan School
Muscat; second place was clinched by Huda bint Abdullah bint Sleeman
from Aisha Al Riamiya School; and joint third place was shared by
Radiyah Mubarak Muhammed al Shami from Wilayat Yedbid School and Hajer
bint Abdullah al Munthari from Al Shaikha Naftha Al Riamiya School.
“I would like to
congratulate all the winners of the contest. It is remarkable to see all
the wonderful work submitted by students from all over the region. The
design contest has served as a platform to develop young designers of
today and to encourage the creative minds of tomorrow,” said Dr Charles
Bleick, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at VCUQatar. Winning entries
were judged by a jury comprising representatives from the Qatari
Ministry of Education, DHL and Arts Faculty from VCUQatar.
“This year we had a great
response to our design competition. The artworks created by
participating candidates were of exceptional standard. The students did
a great job in the use of imagery to capture their vision of success,
which is this year’s theme,” said Donna Duffett, Events Project Manager,
VCUQatar.
From all the participants,
three semi-finalists from each country were chosen and will receive cash
prizes of $1,200 for first place, $800 for second place and $600 for
third place. The three winners from each country will now move on the
second phase of the competition in which two, full four-year
scholarships to attend VCUQatar will be won by the two finalists.
